Golliwogs banned from Auckland airport shelves after Big Boi tweet

27 Aug

On Thursday, Sir Lucious L. came across offensive “Golliwog” dolls in a New Zealand airport and let the world know about it via Twitter (see below).

Two days later, the airport shop removed all such toys from its shelves.

“Once we were made aware, the retailer was immediately asked to remove the product from sale,” airport corporate relations manager Richard Llewellyn said. “In this case we acknowledge that this is a product widely regarded as inappropriate and likely to cause offense, and as a result the retailer has been asked to remove it from sale. We apologize for any offense caused as a result of this product being on sale at the airport.”

Originating from an 1895 children’s book, Golliwogs have long since generated racist associations as villains. [New Zealand Herald] To learn more about the history of Golliwogs, go here.

Thanks to all the fans who replied and retweeted. And for all you New Zealanders out there:

Outside Lands Festival

14 Aug

Last night I had to cancel my performance at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, due to technical difficulties with the DJ rig. Those of you who were waiting saw that we had many smart people trying to fix the situation. But sometimes things happen beyond our control.

Given the circumstances, I couldn’t play the type of show that the people deserved. It killed me to do it, but I decided it was best to maintain the integrity of my show and not perform at all. I appreciate the Outside Lands crew for their understanding and their cooperation in trying to make the show happen.

My apologies to all the fans who stood out in the field for all that time. You’ve all been great to me and I ‘preciate your support. Rest assured, San Francisco, this ATLien will make it up to you. Save your ticket stubs from the festival. We’ll do something special when I return.

Stank ya’!
